A Nod’s as Good as a Wink to a Blind Bat

01 May

So, it’s come to this:

The librarian needs book recommendations.

It has now been nine months since I quit my job at the public library in Maine, and six months since I started working at the school library here in Seattle. The change of professions and scenery has had some undeniable benefits: I allowed my ALA membership to lapse, it’s been months since I harangued a friend or colleague over Section 215 of the Patriot Act, and my library blog link list has been pared to about 10, since I no longer pay any attention to 90% of the lib blogs I used to read. (Amazingly enough, I don’t actually miss reading whiny laments about how “Nobody respects our profession! I have a Masters, darn it!” Yeah, working with families who’re living on the streets and in domestic violence shelters sure does put all that in perspective.)

However, the unfortunate flip side of this is that, since the library I now work in caters entirely to an audience aged 10 and under, I don’t have an excuse to order the latest adult fiction. (Hell, since the school has no book budget and is entirely dependent on grants and donations, I don’t get to order any books, but that’s another matter.) No longer being in a library where boxes of new fiction are showing up every week, I have no idea what’s new and good to read. Any title suggestions for someone whose taste in fiction runs to Thomas Pynchon, Frank Herbert, Aldous Huxley, Philip K. Dick, and Robert Anton Wilson? Help me out here, people.

On a completely unrelated topic: Happy Beltane, Walpurgisnacht, and May Day to any Celts, Druids, Wiccans, Pagans, and Anarcho-syndicalists in the hizz-ouse. Granted, I find your religions and/or belief systems every bit as ludicrous as Christianity, but since none of you have, to my knowledge, ever tried to

a) Convert me
b) Extort money from me via the television, or
c) Turn America into a fascist theocracy,

you’re okay in my book.
