Love The One You’re With

03 Feb

I may not be a fan of the Seattle Seahawks, but since my Pats’ threepeat effort ended weeks ago, and I live in Seattle anyway, I was prepared to root for them – albeit halfheartedly. However, in the past week, my lukewarm support for the Seahawks has turned far more ardent.

Why? Because I really, really hate the Pittsburgh Steelers.

I’ve never liked the Steelers, but the incessant, non-stop teabagging of them on the part of the national media has turned my antipathy to abject loathing. Hey, guess what, everyone? Jerome Bettis is from Detroit! And it’s his last game! And his parents always go to his games! Zowie, bet you didn’t know that, huh? Enough already.

I am sick of the way the media is indulging in stupid, assinine sterotypes about both the team and the city of Seattle. I am sick of hearing Joey Porter run his big, fat, stupid mouth. I am sick of Terrible Towels. Stick a sock in your Terrible Towels.

Most of all, I am sick of the media and the vast majority of fans treating this game as if it’s a foregone conclusion, and a Pittsburgh win inevitable. The situation is starting to remind me very strongly of Superbowl XXXVI, when everyone spent the weeks leading up to game debating whether or not the imminent St. Louis win would or would not establish them as a “dynasty.” If the Patriots were mentioned at all, it was always within the context of how “lucky” they were to be there at all, and whether they would manage to cover the 14 point spread, or would be blown out by 50 points.

I trust we all remember what happened in Superbowl XXXVI.

As for this year’s game: Seattle’s offensive line, the best in football, will be able to hold off Pittsburgh’s famed 3-4 blitz schemes, thus exposing their overrated secondary. On defense, the Seahawks’ league-leading pass rush will force Ben Roethlisberger, who hasn’t faced a strong rush during the entire postseason, into a couple of crucial mistakes. They will return at least one turnover for a touchdown.

Final score: Seattle 31, Pittsburgh 27
