Da Vinci Load

10 Mar

As the minutes tick down until the release of this summer’s Da Vinci Code movie, the book’s author, Dan Brown, is embroiled in a copyright infringement suit in England. The authors of “Holy Blood, Holy Grail,” are suing Brown, claiming that he lifted elements of his plot, virtually unchanged, from their book. Having read both, it’s pretty obvious where Brown got many of his ideas, but since I know nothing about British copyright laws, I can’t really guess whether the resemblance is close enough for a judgement against him.

Meanwhile, US Catholic bishops have launched a website to refute the book, in advance of the movie opening. In addition, Catholic League president William Donohue (the same assclown who accused Hollywood of being “run by secular Jews who hate Christianity“) has thown a pissy fit over the movie, demanding that Ron Howard run a disclaimer at the beginning of the movie, labelling it a “work of fiction.”

The last time I checked, the Bible didn’t start with a “this book is a work of fiction” disclaimer, so why should a movie disputing the Biblical version of Jesus’ life have to run one? After all, there is exactly as much proof that the Bible accurately portrays events in Palestine 2000 years ago as there is for the accuracy of The Da Vinci Code…which is, to say, none whatsoever. So, essentially, we have the defender of one particular fairy tale demanding an apology and disclaimer from the purveyors of another fairy tale.

Does this lunacy officially signal our passage through the Looking Glass?
