This is NOT the Way to End a Curse
As a Red Sox fan, I feel an instinctive kinship with sympathy for Cubs fans, whose team is entering its 99th consecutive season without a World Series title. (Granted, the Cubbies don’t even make it into the Top 20 on espn’s Pain and Suffering Ratings, but try telling that to anyone from the North Side of Chicago. Hint: prepare to duck.)
Anyhoo, it seemed that things might be looking up for the Cubs this year; they spent a crapload of money luring free agents around whom to rebuild their team, and the National League sure as hell ain’t getting any stronger overall. So everything is hunky dory in Chicagoland, right?
Maybe not. The Cubs are currently for sale, and it appears that George Will is one of the people interested in buying them. (link via Library Chronicles)
Wow, who knew that farting out right-wing swill paid so well?
But so what? Granted, Will’s said some blindingly idiotic things over the years, but let’s have some perspective. If you assembled a list of The 100 Stupidest Things Ever Said By Conservative Pundits, he’d be hard-pressed to make the cut…not in any world where Hannity, Limbaugh, Savage, Drudge, Hitchens, Novak, Krauthammer, and the entire editorial staff of the National Review continue to draw breath. So why my trepidation for the future of the Cubbies, should Will become their owner?
Well, we all remember what happened the last time an asshole Republican named George owned a major league baseball team, don’t we?
