Instinct Blues
So, as we stand on the verge of another concert season, I’m faced with an embarrassment of riches. I just found out that the White Stripes summer tour, in which they’ve vowed to hit all 16 US states that they’ve never been to before, will kick off in none other than little ol’ Portland, Maine. And, what do you know, the show just so happens to fall on July 22nd, the Special Lady Friend’s birthday. Two birds with one stone!
The only possible drawback is that we were planning on leaving Seattle on July 1st and taking three weeks to drive cross country back to Maine. But thanks to a heads-up from Raul Duke, I’ve just found out that none other than Willie Nelson is playing the Gorge on the Fourth of July, with Drive-By Truckers and Son Volt opening up. Shit! Do I stick around for several extra days with no place to stay, in order to see the Red Headed Stranger? Or do I hit the road as originally planned, in order to reach my new hometown in time to see the Stripes? Why must you taunt me so mercilessly, O Fate? This is worse than Sophie’s Choice!
While I mull over this momentous decision, here are the new discs in current rotation:
