Gee, I Feel Hipper Already

07 Aug

For the past month and a half, the cross-country move, subsequent unpacking, job search, and wedding prep have so consumed my time that I’ve been sadly remiss in keeping up to date with my library blog reading. Thus, I completely missed the happy news: The New York Times has pronounced librarians hip! Huzzah! (link via Cool Librarian)

Man, how does the Times do it? Their razor-sharp insight has once again delved straight to the meat of the issue. Yes, I and thousands of other librarians voluntarily go tens of thousands of dollars into debt to obtain virtually useless Master’s degrees that allow us to compete for jobs that pay worse than the average Starbuck’s barista…all so we can look cool to the Great Unwashed. Good Christ.

OK, so maybe personal experience makes me a tad cynical on this issue: in a previous life, I once dated a stereotypical Hipster Librarian, right down to the purple hair, tattoos, and stupid clunky 1950’s Buddy Holly glasses. This person (and her entire clique of like-minded Hipster Librarians) were just about the most shallow, vain, image-obsessed bunch I’ve ever had the misfortune to be associated with (however mercifully briefly.)

Or maybe it’s just laziness. If this Hipster Librarian meme finally (after countless crashes and burns) starts to catch on, I may have to pretend to start giving a shit about meaningless marketing terms like “Library 2.0,” which would royally piss me off.
